MAKURDI – Former Lagos State Police Commissioner, Alhaji Abubakar Tsav, has condemned calls for the declaration of a state of emergency in Benue State, saying the agitation is ill motivated and unacceptable.
The critic who noted that the security situation in Benue State had not degenerated to the level warranting the calls, emphasized that an action in that direction would not yield the desired solution.
Tsav whose reaction is coming against the backdrop of the increased spate of insecurity in the state recently implored all security agencies in Benue State to rededicate themselves to their responsibilities by confronting the security situation in the state headlong.
The anti corruption crusader who spoke to newsmen in Makurdi further advised the state police command to re-strategise in its quest to stem the tide of crime in the state by embarking more on foot, vehicular and motorcycle patrols in Makurdi and other major towns in the state as against the usual road blocks.
He also called on members of the public to be prepared to team up with the police in the task of crime prevention and control, stressing that it will take the collective efforts of all to achieve a crime free society.
“The police should be friendly and helpful to members of the public. They need to be more serious and ruthless with offenders. Nobody should be seen to be above the law,†he said.
While stressing that only the Governor and his deputy are covered by the immunity clause, the retired police boss stressed that, “every other person is liable to arrest and prosecution if he or she commits an offence.â€
He also reiterated the need for policemen who have stayed in the state for a very long time and are familiar with local criminals to be transferred out of the state.
