Strike: Akala threatens to sack Poly lecturers

By Ola Ajayi

IBADAN – THE face-off between the Oyo State Governor, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala, management of the Polytechnic, Ibadan and members of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics got to the climax yesterday as the governor threatened to sack over 400 striking lecturers tomorrow if they fail to resume duty.

This came just as the management of the state-owned institution accused the Chairman of the union, Mr. Babatunde Dosunmu of politicizing the strike by inviting the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Lamidi Apapa to its congress.

The warning was handed down by the State Commissioner for Education, Professor Taoheed Adedoja while speaking with newsmen after the weekly executive meeting yesterday.

He said any member of staff of the Polytechnic and the College of Education, Oyo who flouts the directive will be replaced immediately by the management of the institutions.

Specifically, the management of the Polytechnic, Ibadan stated that Mr. Dosunmu, knowing that the State NLC chairman contested against the governor in the last election, should not have invited him to its congress, saying the act was tantamount to act of indiscipline.

Consequent upon the allegation of “gross indiscipline” leveled against the ASUP boss who has been a thorn in the flesh of the state government and the school authority, he has been issued a query by the school authority.
