Speaker, chief arraigned for public disturbance

The police have arraigned the Speaker of Bida Local Government Council, Usman Manko Elatan and a traditional title holder, Alhaji Abdullahi Manko, (Rujyan of Nupe) in court for allegedly disrupting the naming ceremony of a middle aged man for naming his child Mohammed Bello Masabe after the controversial man with 86 wives in Bida.

They were arraigned on three-count charge of criminal intimidation, criminal conspiracy and inciting public disturbance which are offences punishable under section 97,397 and 114 of the Penal Code.

Police prosecutor, Sgt. Adamu Mohammed had told the chief magistrate court No 1 Bida that the complainant had on August 14 reported the case directly to the court that the accused persons have vowed to shed his blood if he continued with plans of naming his child after the man with 86 wives.

The complainant who was unruffled with the threat went ahead with the naming ceremony and insisted in naming the child Mohammed Bello Masaba and the accused also made do with their threat to disrupt the occasion.

Sergeant Mohammed told the court that as the naming ceremony was about to commence, some youths suspected to have been mobilized by the accused persons stormed the venue of the ceremony and disrupted the naming.
