ABUJA – Senator Smart Adeyemi, Chairman Senate Committee on Federal Character and Inter-Governmental Affairs, has described the death of Alhaji Doyin Mahmod and Mr. Bayo Ohu as great loss to the nation, journalism profession and their families.
He said with their death on diffrent circumstances, the journalism profession has lost great and fine hands.
Senator Adeyemi who represents Kogi West Senatorial District and a two-term National President of Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), described particularly, the late Alhaji Mahmud as a gentle man who gave a greater definition to the journalism profession and has done the profession proud with the record of achievement he has set as the pioneering Head of Department of Mass Communications of the University of Ilorin, where he served untill his death.
“ Journalism has suffered a great deal with the death of these two great men of the pen. I recall the feat that Alhaji Mahmud recorded as the Editor of the Herald, as the Training Editor of The Guardian and as the pioneering Managing Director of the Independent Newspapers.
He was such a dedicated journalist, firm and frank. He demonstrated this same skill at the University of Ilorin, where, against all odds, he piloted the Mass Communication Department to an enviable position today.
“My heart goes to the families of these two gentlemen, to the NUJ, to their employers and to Nigerians on their sudden death. It is my prayer that God Almighty will give them rest in His bossom.
