BENIN—THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, yesterday faulted the statement credited to Governor Adams Oshiomhole over the parading of the armed thugs who were allegedly arrested during the re-run election in Akoko Edo constituency 1 by the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ogbonaya Onovo.
The governor had, in a statement signed by the state Commissioner of Information and Orientation, Mr. Abdul Oroh, accused the IG of playing the PDP script when he said those who were arrested were hired by the Action Congress (AC), so as to unleash mayhem on the PDP members.
But reacting yesterday in a statement signed by its spokesman in the state, Chief Nosa Adams, the party said it expected the governor to commend the IG for the effort of his men in arresting the political thugs rather than condemning his statement which, according to them, was as a result of the confessional statement made by the armed thugs.
According to the party, “we are not surprised when we saw the thugs paraded by the IG in Abuja because we raised this alarm before the election that the AC was not campaigning for the election but was importing thugs but nobody listened”.
“But we are glad that we have vigilant police officers who raided the home of the AC leader, Mr Amune, and apprehended the thugs with cache of arms.
“The excuse being given by Governor Oshiomhole that the thugs were not arrested at any polling booth is laughable because any body who observed the election knows that there were sporadic shooting and intimidation of voters in almost all the wards in that constituency.â€
The PDP added that “we are proud of Onovo for arresting the suspects and we are saying he should not be intimidated.
“We urgently urged him to arrest and prosecute all those that perpetrated that mayhem, including the AC candidate, so as to serve as a deterrence to others in future electionsâ€.
