Police arraign suspect over plot to kill Rep

The Federal Lawmaker representing Ukum, Logo and Katsina-Ala federal constituency at the lower chamber of the National Assembly Mr. Mzenda Iho has escaped death by the whiskers.

According to First Information Report of the Benue State police Command filed before a Makurdi Magistrate Court, the former Benue State House of Assembly Speaker was billed to be a victim of poisoned food but for the honesty of the lawmaker’s cook who refused to carry out the nefarious plot of prematurely terminating the life of the parliamentarian.

Arraigning the alleged mastermind of the plot to kill Mr. Iho, Police prosecution told the Makurdi Court that a 52 year old politician in Kasina-Ala (names withheld) had approached the cook of the lawmaker, Lydia Gabo on the 2nd of August, 2009 in her house persuading her to carry out the mission of poisoning the food of the lawmaker.

The accused was said to have persuaded Lydia Gabo to collect a substance he had prepared in order to apply same in the food of Mr. Iho with the intent to kill him.

According to the cook, the accused had threatened to kill her upon her refusal to collect the substance to do his bidding an offence punishable under sections 95(229 and 397) of the Penal Code of Northern Nigeria.

But the plot was foiled when the cook reported the matter to the federal lawmaker who also alerted the police and the subsequent arrest of the accused.

Ruling at the first hearing, the presiding Magistrate Mrs. C.I. Bakare granted bail to the accused in the sum of N100,000 and a surety in the like sum.

The bail condition also provided that the surety must be a top civil servant resident in Makurdi while the case was adjourned to the 24th of September 2009 for further mention.
