AKURE – NATIONAL Chairman of the caretaker committee of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Alhaji Olanrewaju Basiru Wednesday called for the autonomy of local government system in the country.
Basiru said the “constitutional hindrances on the local government administration must be removed during the effort at reviewing the constitution of the country.
According to a statement by the national publicity secretary of NULGE, Mr. Sunday Olawole and made available to Vanguard in Akure said the union had concluded arrangements to present a memorandum to the National Assembly.
Basiru observed that lack of constitutional role for the local government system in Nigeria had been the bane of the country’s national growth.
He added that it was incumbent that development started from the grassroots, regretting that but for lack of the constitutional provision, the third tier of government had remained an appendage of other tiers of government without definite roles.
