NMA faults DTHA on sacked hospital MD

ASABA—CHAIRMAN of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Delta State chapter, Dr. Akpufuoma Pemu, said yesterday that members of the state House of Assembly went beyond their bound by talking about withdrawal of the license of the sacked Zonal Medical Doctor over alleged negligence of duty.

Reacting to the Tuesday’s House resolution on the matter, Dr. Pemu said in a statement that “much as Delta State House of Assembly is entitled to their opinion, they went beyond their brief over withdrawal of license as you cannot take what you never gave.

There are three tiers of government. Medical Council of Nigeria Act regulates and supervises doctors and it is the only one that has the  power to withdraw the doctor’s license after due investigation and the doctor is found wanting”, the statement added.

The House of Assembly had on Tuesday ordered that the Zonal Medical Director at Ogwashi-Uku General Hospital, Dr. Michael Ogbangwo and a Staff Nurse, one Mrs. Helen Ofuagbor be sacked over negligence that eventually led to the death of a patient rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention. In addition the House called for the withdrawal of  the operating licenses of the doctor and the nurse.

The affected Zonal Medical Director, Dr.Ogbangwo had while testifying before the House committee on Health admitted that he heard people shouting and saw torchlight but did not know they came because of a patient.
