OWERRI – Imo State government says it will not spare any effort towards maintaining the polio-free status of the state and ensure the reduction of child mortality, which is rated among the highest in the world.
Governor Ikedi Ohakim, made the promise in his address at the flag-off ceremony of the state polio eradication campaign and grand finale of this year’s World Breastfeeding Week, at Omuma, Oru east Local Government Area of the state.
“Imo State regards primary healthcare as very important. No effort towards the reduction of child mortality would be spared by this administrationâ€, Ohakim said.
While saying that child mortality is unbearably high in Nigeria, the Governor however, promised that the fight against polio and other child killer diseases would continue in all the local government areas in the state.
He appealed to parents to ensure that their children are immunized against the six killer diseases. He distributed 27 brand new buses to the health departments of the local councils.
Welcoming the participants earlier, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Vin Udokwu, said that the state actively and successfully participated in all the rounds of the nationally organised polio campaigns, leading to the present polio-free status of the state since 2005.
