Flood ravages Bayelsa

By Samuel Oyadongha

YENAGOA – Nature has again unleashed its awesome power on the people of Yenagoa and its environs following unprecedented floods which have sent many residents packing from their homes.

Although the issue of flooding in the state has been a perennial problem, the sheer volume of flood being experienced in Yenagoa this time around has been a source of sorrow to most residents.

But the problem in the capital city, to a large extent, could be described as self-inflicted due to man’s insatiable quest to develop without recourse to obeying the laws of nature.

How could one explain a situation where roads are constructed without recourse to conducting a comprehensive environmental impact assessment of the area or man erecting structures on the right of way of natural drainage such as canals and creeks?

This is the ugly scenario in Yenagoa where flood has sacked many families necessitating the emergence of make shift wooden bridges in parts of the capital city and forcing residents to abandon their cars along the major roads.
