Church disowns paraded kidnap suspect

By George Onah
Port Harcourt—  A kidnap suspect, said to be a pastor, who was allegedly caught in the act in Rivers State and paraded by the State Security Service (SSS) has been disowned by the church.

The man and his girlfriend had been picked up for abducting an eight-year-old boy, from a branch of the church in Port Harcourt.

It was learnt that N5 million ransom was demanded, after which the girlfriend of the man moved the boy to Owerri and later to Ekpoma in Edo State where the boy was rescued and the two suspects arrested.

In a statement made available to Vanguard, resident pastor of the church, said the man was “a helping hand to the children teacher” but had long been excommunicated.

“The truth is that the said man now in the custody of the SSS was a member of the church and a helping hand to the children teacher, otherwise called minder, and not a teacher nor a pastor in the church

“He had long been sent away from the church because of his ungodly behaviour.  The said man only surfaced in the church premises during the dedication of the church edifice and took advantage of the relationship he had earlier built with the children to perfect his dastardly act on the busy day of the dedication”, the church stated.

It praised security operatives “for their wonderful performance in rescuing the covenant child and the possible arrest of the men of the underworld”.
