Benue cautions councils over N1.7bn excess crude share

By Peter Duru

MAKURDI  -  Benue State Government has warned that it would not hesitate to wield the big stick against any of the 23 local government council chairmen in the state who misappropriates the council’s share of the N1.68 billion excess crude funds accruable to the councils from the federation account.
The government, therefore, implored the council chairmen to ensure the frugal application of the funds in order not to incur the wrath of the state government.

Special Adviser to Governor on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Sam Ode gave the warning council bosses while on an on-the-spot assessment tour of the local government councils of the state.

Ode who directed council administrators in the state to expend the money only on capital projects that would impact meaningfully on the lives of the rural people emphasized that the state government would not accept anything short of the government’s directive.

According to the Adviser, “the councils must stick to directive that the funds should be strictly applied to projects execution, and under no circumstance should any part of the funds be used to settle overheads or pay salaries because government will not tolerate any misapplication of the funds”, Ode said.
