By Chidi Nkwopara

OWERRI-No fewer than five persons have been reported dead while more than five others are presently on danger list, following two separate road traffic accidents recorded during the Sallah holidays in Imo State.

Confirming the sad story to Vanguard in a telephone interview, the Imo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Mr. Angus Ibezim, said  the road traffic accidents occurred along Owerri-Onitsha and Owerri-Umuahia federal highways.

“The accident along Owerri-Onitsha highway eventually turned multiple. Initially, a Mercedes Benz  tipper with registration number XR 828 ENU had a lone accident and not long after, a trailer with registration number XA 397 UBG, which was on top speed, crashed into the scene and crushed four on-lookers”, Mr. Ibezim said.

The Sector Commander explained that the second accident, occurred at about 2.30pm, adding that the location was at the ever busy highway.

“Our officers and men in collaboration with some police personnel, have towed the tipper to our office, while the dead, three females and a male, have been deposited in the morgue”, Ibezim said.

The Imo FRSC boss blamed the accident on dangerous driving, adding that the driver of the Honda Accord car was making a u-turn at a blind curve close to the Heartland FM gate.
