Robbers kill 2, injured others in bank raid

By Kolade Larewaju
HELL was virtually let loose yesterday in Ijebu Igbo, Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State, as dare devil armed robbers attacked a new generation bank and later clashed with Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) victory rally leaving no fewer than two persons dead.

The bandits about 10 in number allegedly carted away about N12 million during the robbery operation.

The robbery operation coincided with a rally organised by the local government chapter of PDP to celebrate last Thursday’s victory of Governor Olugbenga Daniel at the State Election Petitions Tribunal throwing them into disarray as party loyalists had to run for dear lives

Vanguard reliably gathered that the State Commissioner for Works, Mr.Segun Adekoya, the caretaker chairman of the local government, Mr. Wale Osiyemi, and the party chairman, Alhaji Bashir Adebajo, among several party chieftains, escaped being killed in the ensuing melee.

Eye witnesses said the robbery gang stormed the FCMB branch located on Station Road, Ijebu Igbo, brandishing sophisticated weapons, and succeeded in entering the bank after killing a security guard.

Several members of staff of the bank were said to have been injured before making away with their loot.

But the situation got worse when the bandits ran into a convoy of PDP supporters who were celebrating the party’s success at the tribunal. which had taken off from Ago-Iwoye, another town in the local government, and headed for Ijebu Igbo to round off the rally at a primary school not far from the council secretariat.

Sensing that the crowd might foil their desperate bid to escape, the bandits were said to have shot sporadically to scare away the jubilant party men and in the process killed the Personal Assistant of the Governor’s Liaison Officer in the council, Mr. Adekoya Adeleke, simply identified as Sanya.

The eyewitness said “the robbers attacked the bank some minutes after 1 pm and they injured many staff of the bank. They killed one of the security men and later took away large sums of money. We gathered that about N12 million was taken away.

“But what surprised a lot of us was that several mobile policemen attached to the local government secretariat which was just a stone throw to the bank failed to do anything while the robbery lasted. At least, 10 policemen are attached to the secretariat.”

When contacted yesterday, the state Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Hashimu Argungu, confirmed the bank robbery but said he was yet to get details of the incident as at press time.

He explained that it was during the exchange of gun fire between the bandits and a team of policemen that the security guard was killed at the bank.

Argungu, who denied that the armed robbers clashed with the PDP supporters, said he had already dispatched men of the State Criminal Investigation Department to the scene for further investigation.
