Rescue Edo from kidnappers’ scourge, CAN urges FG

By Simon Ebegbulem
BENIN—THE Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Edo state chapter, has expressed worries over what it described as incessant kidnapping of men of God and other residents of the state.

It, therefore, appealed to the federal government to urgently come to the aid of the state government in checking the activities of criminals.

CAN also urged the State House of Assembly to partner with the state governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomohle, in his efforts to modernize Benin City and other parts of the state, admonishing that the on-going effort to actualize the realization of the capital city master plan must be pursued with caution in order not to further impoverish the poor.

Addressing newsmen in Benin yesterday, the state Chairman of CAN, Rt. Rev. Peter Imasuen, lamented that the “phenomenon of kidnapping in particular, which is relatively new to our state, has assumed such magnitude that the earlier occurrences of the act in other states where it all started, have now been dwarfed by Edo state experience.

“This is a source of worry for CAN because this ugly development appears to have overwhelmed the police whose primary function is the protection of lives and property.

“In the light of the above, we appeal to the federal government to urgently come to the aid of the state government by helping to quicken the deployment of crack security operatives and in particular under cover agents to the state.”

Rev.Imasuen traced the cause of the kidnapping in the state to the socio-economic situation in the state whereby a large number of youths were unemployed and urged the state government to, as a matter of urgency, address the issue by facilitating the establishment of medium and small scale businesses as a matter of deliberate government policy.

He however commended the efforts of the state government to create jobs and also fortify security in the state, advising the police to “ approach the contingency with extra zeal and also help to encourage information gathering by protecting sources of information in order not to endanger the lives of such patriotic citizens of the state”.
