Panic in Abeokuta, cop killed as rival cults clash

Abeokuta – Residents of Adigbe area of Abeokuta,   the Ogun State capital, Thursday evening, ran helter skelter following a bloody clash between suspected rival cult groups of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic which led to the killing of a policeman at a popular bar in the area.

An eyewitness account told Sunday Vanguard that residents of the area had their hearts in their mouths for over one hour during which cultists exchanged fire before the arrival of policemen who dislodged them.

The policeman killed, simply identified as Olawaye, was said to have just arrived the bar amidst friends when the shooting started and was hit in the neck by a stray bullet. It was gathered that the incident started at about 7.00 p.m and the deceased was said to have been a threat to the cultists in the area mainly populated by students of higher institutions.

Confirming the development, Ogun State commissioner of police, Alhaji Hashimu Argungu, said investigation into the incident had commenced but declined comment on whether any arrest had been made.
