Ijaw group disowns Tompolo’s representative on amnesty

By Simon Ebegbulem
BENIN—THE Warri Ijaw Peace Monitoring Group (WIPMG) has disowned one Ettala Harry who claimed he was mandated to represent the militant leader, High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, in the on-going amnesty programme of the federal government.

The group also described as untrue, claims by one Ereremu Otu, who was arrested in Benin City for alleged involvement in the kidnapping of some individuals in Edo state, that he was an aide to Tompolo, asserting that some persons were just trying to drag the name of the militant leader in the mud “because they are selfish of his efforts so far in fighting the cause of the Niger Delta”.

In a statement signed by the Chairman of the WIPMG, Chief Patrick Bigha, made in Benin City, the group described as alarming the “rate at which people are claiming to represent the foremost Niger Delta freedom fighter in the on-going amnesty deal.

“Some also claim to be his aides as they were caught by the police in connection with kidnapping in Edo state.
“The latest being the claim of one Etella Onwuchekwa and another Etella Harry on separate occasions that they have the legal mandate of representing Tompolo in the amnesty deal.

“The truth of the matter is that these people are impostors, fraudsters and political jobbers as none of them has the legal mandate of Tompolo to represent him in the amnesty deal.

“In fact such people should be arrested and prosecuted without delay as they are out there to derail the amnesty process.”

The group added that “ Tompolo will make his statement at the appropriate time.  The general public should be careful with such imposters not to fall victim of their evil acts.  Tompolo is one among millions.

“His integrity, patience and humility has seen him through over the years. He is a man to behold. He is a selfless man that seeks the interest of others and place the welfare of others above his.

“Perhaps, we may deduce two reasons for people claiming to be his representatives and aides. They want to have cover with his name because of the respect he has commanded over the years from responsible people.

“Some are out there to drag his good name to the mud for their selfish reasons. In all, we believe that the good Lord will deliver him from the hands of evil men and will continue to preserve and protect him.”
