Gunmen raid crown prince’s residence

By Jimitota Onoyume
PORT HARCOURT—   HEAVILY armed men Monday attacked the residence of the son of the late traditional ruler of Rukpokwu community in Rivers state.

Some members of the family of the late traditional ruler said the armed men apparently came for the crown prince of the area.

They said the armed men set the residence on fire when it became clear that their target had fled. The inferno affected some vehicles in the compound, and it took the combined effort of community folks to extinguish the fire.

Another source told  Vanguard that the son of the deceased traditional ruler was inside when they came, but fled in the heat of the commotion caused by the assailants.

According to the source, the armed men, out of frustration, vent their anger by setting the building on fire, but no life was lost.

“They came for the crown prince but missed him. In the frustration, they had to set the place on fire. You can see cars that were consumed in the fire,” a community source said

When contacted, the state Police PRO, Mrs. Rita Inoma Abbey, confirmed the development. Meanwhile, a security source told the Vanguard that a grenade was recovered at the scene of the incident.

At press time, the people of the community were seen in groups discussing the development, and efforts to reach the Prince proved abortive.
