Go back to work, Imo tells striking IMSU lecturers

By Chidi Nkwopara

Owerri – Imo State government has ordered the striking academic and non-academic staff of Imo Staff University (IMSU), Owerri, to return to work immediately.

Government similarly directed the Governing Council of IMSU to open a register, which all striking staff are expected to sign as an indication that they have returned to work.

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Dr. Amanze Obi, made government’s stand known in a statement in Owerri, yesterday.

“Members of staff who do not sign the register on or before Friday, August 21, 2009, will have themselves to blame as their appointments may be reviewed”, he said.

Stating that the industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has become a serious concern to government, the Commissioner  revealed that government had taken a hard look at the protracted strike and has resolved to deal with it decisively.

“The government of Imo state is living up to its statutory obligations to the University. No salaries are being owed and no agreement has been breached or flouted.
