DESOPADEC workers call for review of contracts

By Emma Amaize
WARRI—EMBATTLED workers of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) yesterday called for re-evaluation of all contracts and supplies  to check over-invoicing, which is a major waste pipe of the commission’s finances.

In a communiqué issued at the end of a special workers’ congress in Warri, the workers also called for the verification of certificates of all staff of the commission, stressing that “this will naturally reduce the staff strength without anybody feeling victimized.”

Fear of retrenchment had gripped the workers for some weeks following reports that the state government was about to reduce the workforce, prompting them to held a congress to review the problems.

Mrs. D. Onwudiachi-Nwabua on the issue of ghost workers and fake graduates in the commission and suggested that apart from certificate verification, the regional and area office workers should be alternated every six months to eliminate ghost workers.
