Maiduguri – The Borno State Government has revealed how it tried to curtail the activities of the late MohammedYusuf, the leader of the Boko Haram sect before the group struck. Malam Usman Chiroma, the Director of Press, Government House, told newsmen in Maiduguri, yesterday, that “The state government had been leading the forces fighting the sect leader before the unfortunate incident.â€
According to him, the state government had taken several steps to prevent the recent sectarian crisis. He recalled that on November 13, 2008, a letter was written to both Yusuf and one of his lieutenants, Malam Abubakar Kilakum in Damasak, asking them to stop preaching.
“The letter specifically asked the people to stop their nefarious activities following a resolution of the state security council. Another letter was written on December 1, to Malam Abubakar Shekau, who was believed to be the second in command to Yusuf, warning against their clandestine activities,†he said.
He said both letters were copied to the Director of the State SecurityService (SSS), the Police Commissioner and other security agencies in the state.
