The police have confirmed five people dead and 15 others missing after two passenger boats sank at Langbasa in Lagos State on Friday. The accident occurred at about 2.00Â p.m. after one of the boats carrying 24 passengers including the driver and conductor developed a technical fault mid-sea.
It was on its way from Baiyeku in Ikorodu to Langbasa. Efforts by the driver and the conductor to save the situation were unsuccessful as water kept seeping into the boat. In no time, it began to sink.
Meanwhile, the second boat with 11 people on board was going in the opposite direction, but once its driver sighted the distressed boat, he steered his own boat towards the distressed one with a view to salvaging the situation.
He was already doing that when, out of desperation, the passengers in the distressed boat all wanted to jump to safety causing both boats to sink. A distress call was sent to marine police who dispatched a team to the scene for rescue operation. The police with the help of fishermen only succeeded in rescuing 15 alive.
