Jalingo — The Taraba State Government has started the distribution of 21,000 tonnes of fertilizer to farmers across the state.
Mr Godwin Nyame, the Commissioner of Agriculture and Natural Resources, who disclosed this in Jalingo said that the state government requested the supply of 60,000 tonnes of fertilizer from the Federal Govern-ment, adding, however, that only 21,000 tonnes were supplied.
Nyame said that 16,000 tonnes out of the stock were distributed to farmers under the newly adopted voucher system.
in which farmers were allocated four bags each through their respective cooperative societies after a N2,500 deposit.
He added that the remaining 5,000 tonnes were sold directly to farmers by the ministry. Nyame, however, criticised some local government councils for not transporting the consignments of fertilisers meant for farmers in their areas.
Besides, the commissioner said that some 45 faulty tractors, inherited from the previous administration, had been repaired and put into use. He also said that four new tractors had been purchased with the revenue generated by the Tractor Hiring Unit of the ministry.
