NDDC: Ondo PDP rejects Enikuomehin’s nomination

By Dayo Johnson
THE controversy trailing the nomination of Mr Benson Enikuomehin as Commissioner representing Ondo State on the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission NDDC deepened weekend as the Peoples Democratic Party in the State has written to the Senate asking it to drop him.

Only last week, all the National Assembly members representing the state except Hosea Ehinlanwo rejected his nomination and asked the Senate President, David Mark and the Committee on NDDC to throw out his nomination.

Two of the three senators, Senator Bode Olajumoke and Gbenga Ogunnniya supported his rejection while all the eight House Representatives members asked the Senate Committee on NDDC to drop his nomination.

Their decision was reached at a caucus meeting held by the members after consultation with stakeholders in the oil producing communities.

The PDP in the state in a statement by the State Chairman and Secretary, Dr Tayo Dairo and Mr Sola Oludipe respectively said Enikuomehin had been expelled by the party because of his anti-party activities.

Leadership of the party in the state sent copies of the letter to the national chairman of the PDP, deputy president of the Senate, speaker of the House of Representatives, his deputy and the chairmen of Senate and House Committees on NDDC and others.

According to the statement, “By the resolution of the State Executive Committee taken on July 7, 2009, the party wishes to vehemently reject the nomination of Mr. Benson Enikuomehin because he is not a bonafide member of our party having been expelled for gross anti party activities.

“On no account should the name of the said Mr. Benson Enikuomehin enjoy tacit or open approval of any of our senators from Ondo State . And no effort should be spared by our senators to ensure that the name of Mr. Benson Enikuomehin is rejected by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.” Since his nomination was made public it has polarised the Party in the state.

But, Senator Hosea Ehinlanwo who is the only supporter of the nominee weekend disagreed with the party. Ehinlanwo at Igbokoda during an interactive session said the nomination of Ehinlanwo was in order. He also lauded Governor Olusegun Mimiko for recommending Enikuomehin.

Ehinlanwo said Enikuomehin’s nomination was in accordance with the wish of the people of the oil producing communities and the NDDC Act.

He declared “I want to assure you that the Senate is very much aware that some group of individuals with selfish interests is out to discredit some state nominees in the Niger Delta particularly in Ondo state just because their candidates have lost out in the race but we thank God that the Senate has not disappointed us.”
