The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has warned against illegal training of Air Traffic Controllers and other technical personnel by some state governments, saying the trend was a threat to Nigeria’s aviation security.
Chairman, Governing Board of NAMA, Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje, who gave the warning in Lagos yesterday declared that the agency was the sole parastatal given the statutory responsibiliy by Act No 48 of 1999 to recruit and train personnel for air traffic control at Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria.
According to him, the warning became necessary to avoid a recurrence of September 11, 2001 terror attacks on America in the country.
“We are making this warning to avoid the 911 incident here and we are saying this because of the safety implication.
“NAMA will no longer accept this and we will mobilise relevant authorities to ensure that this trend is curbed for the sake of our national security,†Baraje said.
