High rate of accident worries FRSC

By Chidi Nkwopara

OWERRI—Repeated road traffic crash (RTC) along the ever busy Anara-Okohia-Umuelemai federal highway, which has claimed so many lives is giving both the communities and the Imo State Command of Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) sleepless nights.

Confirming this development in an exclusive interview, the Sector Commander, Mr. Angus Ibezim, and a member of the community, who simply identified himself as Chief Onumaegbu, lamented that the road crashes usually occur at a dangerous curve, the villagers call “Ugwu Omere Lawyer” in Okohia.

“On July 11, 2008, no fewer than 19 persons died, while 22 sustained serious injury at the same spot. On May 23, 2009, there was yet another road traffic crash, again at the same spot. There are several other instances with its attendant loss of lives”, Ibezim said.

While blaming some of the crashes on dangerous overtaking, Ibezim noted that this particular portion of the road is a sharp sloppy curve.

“This particular spot where these crashes occur is sharp, sloppy curve and narrow. Any vehicle on speed may find it difficult to avoid a head-on collision with any on-coming vehicle”, the Imo FRSC boss said.

Fielding questions, Ibezim lamented that there are no road signs and demarcating markings to warn motorists approaching the sharp bend. He called for the re-designing of the dangerous spot to conveniently accommodate two vehicles.
