Group condemns Benue labour leader killing

MAKURDI — A civil society group,  Lawyers Alert, has conde-mned the weekend killing of a renowned labour leader and Chairman of the Benue State branch of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Tony Udu, describing it as barbaric, shocking and unfortunate.

According to a statement by the leader of the group, Mr. Rommy Mom, the government must wake up to its responsibilities of ensuring the safety of lives and property of the people of the state describing his death as one too many in the state in recent time.

Vanguard gathered that Comrade Udu was allegedly assassinated, weekend, inside the new building he was building within the premises of his residence along Tilley Gyado Villa, an outskirt of Makurdi town.

In a statement which was issued by Mr. Terkaa Udu, the younger brother of the slain labour leader on behalf of the family, Tony Idu was allegedly attacked on his return from the Makurdi Catholic Bishop’s visit to his home parish, St. Veronica’s Catholic Church, Agidi, Mbatiav, where he served as Chairman, Planning Committee of the Bishop’s pastoral visit.

“On getting back he proceeded to inspect on-going work on the new building in his residence when the killers struck,” the statement read.

Vanguard gathered that the late chairman of the TUC had returned from the village that night and requested for a flash light to inspect the progress of work at the new building he was erecting.

He was said to have climbed to the first floor of the uncompleted building, only for family members to suddenly hear sounds of gunshots from within the premises and the bang of the feet of persons jumping out of the building.

His family members became jittery but dashed to the uncompleted building only to see the flash light still shining but Comrade Udu was lying in his pool of blood motionless.

Our source disclosed that following the alarm raised by his family members, neighbors dashed to the scene and rushed the unionist to the Makurdi Federal Medical Centre where Doctors confirmed him dead.

When contacted, the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer PPRO, Mr. Samuel Jinadu DSP confirmed the assassination, intimating that the police has already commenced investigations into the murder.

Reacting to the gruesome murder of his colleague, the Benue State NLC Chairman, Comrade Simon Anchaver described the killing as shocking.

Anchaver urged the Benue State Police Command to intensify efforts at uncovering those behind the dastardly act.

Meanwhile the remains of the slain labour leader has been deposited at the mortuary of the Federal Medical Centre Makurdi.
