Flood wreaks havoc in Onitsha

By Vincent Ujumadu

AWKA—PROPERTIES worth millions of naira were destroyed,  weekend, in a  flood that ravaged the Bridge Head housing estate in the commercial town of Onitsha in Anambra state.

Most of the buildings  in the estate built during the Jim  Nwobodo administration, had their ground floors covered with debris, with water levels rising up to the decks in some cases, while vehicles parked in the Estate were submerged. Though some of residents said the flooding had become a yearly occurrence, the latest incident was the worst since the 500 housing units were commissioned in 1980.

When Vanguard visited the Estate, some of the residents were still trapped upstairs, because the entire ground floors were full with debris deposited during the heavy rain that caused the flood. Some of the walls of the buildings were also pulled down by the flood.
