Umuahia—EIGHTEEN new vehicles donated to the 17 local government councils in Abia state by EU-PRIME are lying waste at the Government House, Umuahia, several months after they were delivered to the state government.
The vehicles, equipped with preservative gadgets, were donated by EU-PRIME to assist the state in its immunization programme, especially to the rural areas. Each of the 17 council areas was given one vehicle, while one was given to the state office of EU-PRIME.
Each of the 17 councils was supposed to pay certain amount of money as counter part fund in the collaborative programme on immunization. But the councils, it was learnt had refused to pay, which was why the state government had not released the vehicles to them.
On the day of the presentation of the vehicles, Governor Theodore Orji, who personally received the vehicles warned that the vehicles would only be released to the councils when they pay up their contribution.
But it was leant that non of the councils has paid and the government does not want to release the vehicles since the state government does not tamper with their allocations. Government, it was learnt wants them to pay up and take delivery of their vehicles.
