EFCC urged to probe Pension’s Office

By Anayo Okoli

Umuahia—A group of Customs, Immigration and Prisons pensioners have called on the Economic and financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate their Pensions’ Office, alleging that there is a lot of corrupt acts and malpractices perpetrated in the office.

Members of the group, who pleaded anonymity to avoid being victimized,  alleged that pensions of some retirees have been withheld for months since 2006 by the officers and they have not been paid till date.

According to them, some of the pensioners have had their pension reduced in what they described as a “ridiculous manner without any justifiable reason”.

“Early this year, some pensioners were paid 6% salary increase, but other pensioners who could not afford to travel to Abuja to bribe the accounts staff remain unpaid till date”, the group alleged.

They further alleged that “money meant for prompt payment to pensioners are being paid into fixed deposit accounts to earn interest”, for some officers in the office.

They also claimed that previous complaints by them, were never treated by the officers, as they alleged that “letters of complaints written by pensioners to the Abuja office authorities usually end up in their dustbin”.
