John Mikel Obi will this    week sign a new five-year deal with Chelsea that will catapult him to the top rung of the club’s big earners.

Mikel’s agent John Shittu told KickOff that details of the new contract had been agreed between both parties and only the absence of key characters have held up the official signing.

“He will sign the deal early this week,” Shittu said.“Some of the club officials were away but they were expected back last weekend. As soon as everybody is in, we will sign the new contract.”

Mikel’s initial four year deal was set to run out in the coming season, but he has now agreed a fresh deal with the London club, putting paid to speculation that he was on his way to Italy to join former manager Jose Mourinho.
Shittu said that the current contract would put Mikel on a par with the club’s top earners.“It is a very good deal for him and would put him at par with some of the top earners in the club.”
