Fire razes NTA Owerri

By  Chidi Nkwopara

OWERRI—Mysterious fire, yesterday destroyed the studio and transmitters of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Channel 12, Owerri, Imo state.

Vanguard gathered that the fire started from the studios of the television station. According to an eye witness account,  men of the Imo State Fire Service promptly responded to the distress call, but that the flame was too much when they arrived.

“Fire Service personnel responded on time. They did their best to check the spread of the ravaging fire but not before a lot of damage had been caused. The flame was simply too much”, a staff, who pleaded anonymity said.

Commenting on the incident, the General Manager, Mr. Ernest Anonyuo, who was recently posted to the station said, he did not know the cause of the fire.

“I don’t know the cause of the fire. I am simply in shock. I am confused. I don’t know what to say at this point”, Anonyuo said.

Already, the State Security Council visited the scene, after rising from its meeting, to see things for themselves.

Although the Deputy Governor, Dr. Ada Okwuonu, who led the state Security Council members to the scene, was not allowed into the building because of the thick smoke from the fire, she however, commiserated with the NTA management over the incident

It would be recalled that the fire incident came barely one month after a devastating rainstorm destroyed the mast of television station.
