Crisis rocks Nsukka LG

By Tony Edike

ENUGU—THE Nsukka Local Government Area in Enugu State is now engulfed in crisis following alleged plot by the council chairman, Mr. Dan Ugwuja to remove the leader of the legislative council, Mr. Dominic Ajibo.
Hundreds of youths believed to be supporters of Ajibo besieged the local government secretariat yesterday, in a bid to foil any attempt by the council boss to impeach the leader, a situation that has created tension in the town.

Activities at the local government were paralyzed yesterday, just as the clerk of the legislative council, Mr. Joseph Ugwuanyi, disappeared with the mace to prevent members of the council from sitting.

The council could not sit, as Ugwuanyi was nowhere to be found near the council secretariat, even though the council was billed to sit.

It was gathered that the clerk’s disappearance was not unconnected with the purported plot by the council boss, Mr. Ugwuja popularly called Danigold, to remove Ugwuja, who represents Okpuje, Okutu and Anuka ward.

Ugwuja,  said to be nursing a second term ambition had reportedly been under pressure from some councilors in the area, who want to know how N2 billion that had accrued to the council from federal allocation was spent.

But the chairman, according to sources, was angry with the purported chairmanship ambition of his brother, Oliver Ajibo, who is currently the chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Nsukka Local Government Area.

The council boss reportedly invited the council legislative leader (Ajibo) to his office on Monday and asked him to resign his position in the council, but the demand was turned down.

In the move to edge the leader out,  the council boss allegedly induced eight councilors to commence an impeachment proceeding against him (Ajibo).
