THE election of the majority leader of Oyo State House of Assembly, Mr. Michael Okunlade, representing Oorelope Constituency, has been nullified by the Court of Appeal sitting in the state.
His election was nullified following the appeal filed by the candidate of the Action Congress, AC, in the 2007 election, Mr. Yisau Azeez, that the poll was fraught with malpractices and over voting.
At the sitting of the court on Friday, the Presiding judge, Hon. Justice Chidi Uwa, held that the votes that ushered in the lawmaker who contested on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) in three units during the April 14 House of Assembly election in the state showed that there was over voting.
The AC candidate also alleged that owing to violence and electoral malpractices, many of his supporters were not allowed to vote during the election.
After nullifying the election of the legislator, the court ordered that a fresh election be conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission within 90 days.
