THE Edo State Oil and Gas Producing Areas Development Commission (EDOSOPADEC) weekend, presented 60 motorcycles to six communities in Orhionmwon Local Government Council of the state.
The chairman of the Commission, Mr. Lawrence Ogieva, who made the presentation of the motorcycles in Ikobi, near Oben, the largest oil producing community in the state, noted that though the Commission was established in order to bring development to the oil producing communities, but that it decided to purchase the motocycles in order to assist jobless youths in the areas.
He explained that the gesture would also go to other oil producing communities in the two Local Government Councils of Ovia South West and Ikpoba Okhai, asserting that the idea was to empower some of the youths before the Commission would embark on the building of cottage industries which according to him would give employment to the thousands of jobless youths in the areas.
The beneficiary communities included Ikobi, Iguelaba, Abe and Oben. According to Ogieva, “We are sharing 60 motorcycles today and each community will get 10 through the cooperative society they have formed. This is something to alleviate the pains of the people. The commission is not meant to be sharing bikes. It is meant for the development of the communities.
“We have already engaged in a tour of these areas and the people have sent us their development requests such as police station, primary schools, health centers, electrification projects and town halls. Some of these projects are ongoing and very soon the commission will start inaugurating them. This will at least make our youths busy before we embark on total industrialization which will give a lot of them jobs,” he stated.
