Mueller on Bayern bench for Atletico clash

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola left 31-goal German World Cup winner Thomas Mueller on the bench for his side’s Champions League semi-final first leg at Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.

bayernGuardiola opted for Polish international Robert Lewandowski in a sole striking role at Mueller’s expense as he bolstered the midfield in an attempt to break down Atletico’s rock-solid defence which has kept 32 clean sheets this season.

Xabi Alonso and Thiago Alcantara start in midfield on their return to Spain alongside the on-form Arturo Vidal, who has scored three times in his last four games.

Nineteen-year-old French winger Kingsley Coman also starts ahead of his more experienced compatriot Franck Ribery.

Atletico boss Diego Simeone makes just one change from the side that defeated Barcelona 2-0 at the Vicente Calderon in the quarter-finals.

Fernando Torres returns up front after serving a one-game ban against Barca to replace Yannick Carrasco alongside top-scorer Antoine Griezmann.
