THE President of the Nigeria Squash Federation Alhaji Adamu Erena has unveiled plans to organize regular tournaments aimed at ensuring the growth of squash at the grassroots, even as former President Olusegun Obasanjo is to have a competition staged in his honour on his 79th birthday .
According to Erena, ”There is going to be a one-day invitational tournament that would attract four top players in the categories of senior boys and girls, intermediary cadre, and the junior category .
This is to kick start several activities lined up for the year. The event is to be held in Abuja. We are expecting 16 players for the competition slated for March 12, 2016.
The Federation would as usual sponsor the competition because we want our players to be very active by creating the avenue to express their God-given talents.
We are also planning to honour former President Olusegun Obasanjo with a Birthday Tournament in Abeokuta on March 5, but we have not concluded on that. We have been talking to some people to help make the Championship a reality”, the NSF boss also disclosed.
Meanwhile, despite the paucity of funds, the squash courts at the Abuja National Stadium are wearing a new look courtesy of a member of the board . Erena informed that the member had committed huge money towards rehabilitating the court’s in order to keep the game going. He said he had done similarly in Enugu, Zaria and plans to do more in other states.
