Fresh crisis rocks Urhobo Progress Union

By Emma Amaize

WARRI—FRESH crisis appears to be rocking Urhobo Progress Union, UPU, the apex body of the Urhobo ethnic nationality in Delta State, as a rival faction led by Chief Tuesday Onoge, yesterday, asked Urhobo people to boycott the National Congress/Urhobo Cultural Day celebration scheduled for next month by the Chief Joseph Omene-led UPU.

Publicity Secretary of the splinter group, Alhaji Mumakai Unagha, in a statement, said: “We call on all Urhobo to disregard the so- called national congress and cultural day celebration. They brought Urhobo to its knees with humiliation the people have not faced or passed through in the political history of Nigeria.

“We wish to inform the general public that the UPU is in court. The former secretary general, Chief Albert Akpomudje, instituted an action against the acting president-general, Chief Onoge, at the Federal High Court sitting in Warri which is awaiting determination. Therefore, the idea of the conference is baseless and aimed at deceiving the public.”
