ASABA—The industrial action embarked upon by local government workers in Delta State under the aegis of National Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, recorded 100 percent compliance in Oshilmili North and South, Aniocha North and South, Ika North-East and Ika South Local Government Areas of the state.
The secretariats of the six councils were under lock and key at press time, as workers were not seen in the premises of the councils, except a handful of union officials who refused to come close to journalists who were at the gate seeking for information.
It was gathered that the directive to the workers was to remain at home indefinitely and not to be seen around the local government secretariats until further directives were issued to them.
The union officials sighted at the premises were said to be monitoring events to ensure total compliance with the strike order.
State Chairman of NULGE, Mr David Ofoeyeno, had in a statement addressed to the Secretary to the State Government, alleged that most of the council workers in the state were owed backlogs of salaries ranging from four months and above.
Ofoeyeno regretted that the development had brought untold hardship to members, adding that the state leadership had already directed workers in the affected local governments to embark on indefinite strike from May 11, 2015.
The state NULGE Chairman who is also the Delta State Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, named the affected councils to include, Aniocha North and South, Patani, Isoko North and South, Udu, Ika South, Ika North East, Oshimili North and South, Ukwuani and Ndokwa East and West.
Others are; Ughelli North and South, Okpe, Sapele, Ethiope East and West, Warri South and Uvwie Local Government Areas, insisting that the strike would not be called off until all backlog were paid.
