Dream Team
The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye has charged the U- 23 national team popularly known as Dream Team VI, the Super Falcons and the men’s national basketball team that have already qualified for the 11th All Africa Games holding in Congo Brazzaville from September 4th to 19 this year to ensure they win the gold medals at stake in the competition.
The All Africa Games which is Africa’s fashion of the Olympic Games attracts about 52 countries of Africa and Nigeria has always been a power house in the competition.
The Samson Siasia led Dream Team VI recently qualified for the AAG beating host Zambia 2-1 in Lusaka on Sunday in the return leg of the final round of the qualifiers having played a goalless draw in the first leg decided in Abuja.
Also the Super Falcons made mincemeat of Mali in the return leg of same final round qualifying series beating Mali 8-0 at the main bowl of Abuja National Stadium having played a 1-1 score draw away to Mali in the first leg. The men’s national basketball team also qualified for the All Africa Games having beating Burkina Faso in the first leg of the final round in Ouagadougou 87-63 and also beat Burkina Faso63-50 in the final leg played in Lagos.
The elated DG of the NSC commended the teams for doing the nation proud and charged them to go for the gold medal at stake in their various competitions in Congo Brazzaville.
“The National Sports Commission (NSC) is very happy with the qualification of our national U- 23 football team, the Dream Team VI, the Super Falcons and the men’s national basketball team for this year’s All Africa Games holding in Congo Brazzaville in September.
“We commended their efforts, determination, zeal and patriotism for ensuring Nigeria’s flag is flown in the competition. We are also charging them to go to Congo Brazzaville to complete the job they have started well by winning the gold medals at stake in their respective competitions. We believe they can do it over there and as usual the National Sports Commission will continue to encourage Nigerian sports men and women to continue to win laurels for their fatherland.
“I am also urging the other sports that are still battling to qualify for the All Africa Games to put in their best to get the qualification tickets and make Nigeria proud”, Elegbeleye charged.
