Onuesoke calls for cancellation of new polling units

By Ephraim Oseji

As   controversies continue to trail the authenticity of the new polling units created by the Chairman of Independent National   Electoral Commission (INEC) Professor Atahiru Jega, Delta State Peoples Democratic (PDP) Governorship aspirant in 2007 general election, Chief Sunny Onuesoke has called for the cancellation of the new polling units and conduct of general census to ascertain the true population of  the country.

Onuesoke who made the appeal in a statement made available to our correspondent explained that it is when a general census is conducted   that INEC would be able to know   polling units that would reflect the true population of the different regions that  make up Nigeria.

Reacting to the imbalance of the new polling units which favoured the North with   22,000 polling units   against South 12,000 polling units , Onuesoke who   is the Director of Network for Good Governance (N4GG) said the aforementioned allocation of pollinig units   is against the Nigerian   satellite Google population statistic which recorded   65 percent for South   and 35 percent for North.

Onuesoke argued that investigation had shown that most riverine areas and creeks with difficult terrains in the South-South geo political zone are more populated than areas in the North which recorded highest number of polling units; stressing that the only way to ascertain the true situation of things is for the government to conduct a new census.

“It is after a new census that Jega will now create a new polling units according to the census figures.
