A 51-year-old driver, Edem Asuquo, has been sentenced to two months imprisonment by an Agege Grade ‘A’ Customary Court in Lagos, for not allowing his wife to pack her belongings from the house, following a court order.
President of the court, Mr. Emmanuel Sokunle, ruled that Asuquo should be kept behind bars for disregarding a subsisting judgement.
Sokunle ruled: “Asuquo is, hereby, sentenced to two months imprisonment for contempt of court.”
Sokunle noted that Asuquo declined to allow his 42-year-old wife, Grace, to leave the house, even after judgement was given, thereby disrespect the court’s order.
He said: “I gave a judgement on October 30 and I ordered the woman to go with some policemen to pack her property from Asuquo’s house, but he refused.”
Grace (petitioner), who lives at 4, Thompson Street, Ishaga area of Lagos, had approached the court, seeking the dissolution of her 13-year-old marriage on the grounds that her husband was threatening her life because she was childless, asking her to leave the house.
However, Asuquo, who resides at 4, Ikokoyi Close, Iju Water Works area of Lagos, urged the court not to dissolve his marriage because he still loves her unconditionally despite not having any child for him.
