Baku (Azerbaijan) – The FIFA Referees Committee on Friday named Jamaican Cardella Samuels as the centre referee for the Nigeria-Colombia match at the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The match is slated for Saturday at the Bayil Stadium in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.
Cardella will be assisted by Aguilar Elizabeth, a Slovanian and Liverpool Nykasie from Guyana, while Radzik-Johan Karolina of Poland, will be the Fourth Official.
The match, which Peter Dedevbo, the Head Coach of Flamingoes, says is a must-win, will take place in the 30,000 capacity stadium.
Nigeria and Colombia met once before at a higher level – the semi-finals of the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s Competition, which Nigeria won 1-0.
The second Group A match is between Canada and host, Azerbaijan.
It will be Canada’s second match with a host team in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The North Americans played host New Zealand in 2008, emerging 1-0 winners.
Saturday’s fixture between the U.S. and North Korea is a repeat of the inaugural FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final in Auckland in 2008.
On that occasion, North Korea triumphed 2-1 after extra time, thanks to Jang Hyon-Sun’s winner in the 113th minute.
U.S. took the lead two minutes into the game, courtesy of an own goal by Hong Myong-Hui, before the East Asians equalised in 77th minute through Kim Un-Hyang. (NAN)
