Technical director: Ukeachu favours Onigbinde, Amodu

By Eddie Akalonu

Coach Tony Ukeachu has said the Nigeria Football Federation NFF, should have no problem choosing a Nigerian as its technical director, just as he has recommended the pair of  Shaibu Amodu and Festus Onigbinde as the most suitable hands to man the vacant position in the Federation.

Speaking to Saturday Vanguard Sports, Ukeachu  posited that both men have the experience, capacity and knowledge which the FA has specified for the position.

Earlier, Ukeachu had also expressed support to the Ministerial directive barring the NFF from employing a foreigner for the office, saying there are capable Nigerians available to do the work.

“That office needs someone who is popular among stakeholders, available and has dedication towards meeting the aspirations of the people. We have them ready in those I have mentioned,” he stressed.

Ukeachu, the former Iwuanyanwu Nationale, Enyimba and Udoji United Football club handler feels that both Amodu and Onigbinde  meet the requirements the NFF specified for the job.

“Both men have already worked at club and national team levels and have been instrumental in bringing up some of our notable players. They know our teams and players and have worked in all parts of the country,” he said.

“My take is that they know where to go to get the players and I can’t see how a 39 year old foreigner the NFF initially settled for, could have worked effectively with Nigerian coaches and clubs to transform our football. No foreigner can be effective on the job without having a Nigerian as his guide and support.

Rather than do that, we should entrust the job only on the shoulders of our own person because we have them here and they will be more than dedicated to give the country the best ,” he advised.

Ukeachu therefore, called on the NFF  to gear up effort towards or administrator take up the job,” adding that “however, in the event the NFF do not want Amodu or Onigbinde, there are equally other qualified Nigerians available to take up the post whom we are ready to give full support to be successful on the job,” he stated.
