ALLEGED N32m fraud: Counsel’s absence stalls trial of ex-Vanguard staff

By BARTHOLOMEW MADUKWE
LAGOS—The trial of Mr. Yhisa Badmus, former Chief Accountant to Vanguard Media Limited for conspiracy and fraud involving over N31.75 million, before a Lagos High Court, Igbosere, again could not go on, yesterday, due to the absence of his counsel.

Badmus is standing trial alongside Joseph Ezeobi, former Circulation Supervisor in company in the first charge.

In another charge, involving Badmus, Ezeobi and Ogbole Samuel, same could also not go on due to the same reason.

When the first charge was called, Badmus  and Ezeobi were in court, but counsel to Ezeobi, Mr. Ajuweh Samuel, informed that counsel to the first defendant (Badmus) was not in court and sought for a short adjournment of the matter.

Trial judge, Justice Candide Johnson, consequently adjourned the matter till June 7 to give a reasonable time for the first defendant’s counsel to show up for the trial.

It could  be recalled that at the last adjourned date, May 10, the first defendant’s counsel had told the court that a letter to consolidate the charges had been sent to the Attorney-General of Lagos State, Mr. Ade Ipaye, and that he was asked to report to the office of the Chief Judge, on May 11 in respect of the letter. The court had also turned down argument in Ezeobi’s bail application, pending the consolidation of the charges.
