The police in Rivers say it will soon arraign the man who allegedly killed his girlfriend and buried her in his room in Elechi Beach area of Port Harcourt.
The suspect, James Zakus, was said to have buried the lady in a shallow grave under his bed.
Mr Ben Ugwuegbulam, the Police Public Relations Officer in Rivers, made this known on Wednesday in Port Harcourt in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The police gave the name of the slain woman as Miss Peace Mathias.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr Mohammed Indabawa, had earlier told a news conference in Port Harcourt that the incident took place in the first week of April, while the suspect was arrested on April 11.
However, Ugwuegbulam said that police had almost concluded investigations into the matter, stressing that the suspect would be arraigned before a court on April 19 or April 20.
He described the alleged murder as “callous and wicked’’.
Ugwuegbulam noted that if the woman’s death had been accidental, the suspect would have taken the victim to a hospital for a medical confirmation of her death, rather than burying her secretly.
He, however, conceded that the police had yet to establish contacts with the victim’s parents, adding that the police had been trying to liaise with Akwa Ibom community in Rivers in efforts to get across to her relations.
NAN learnt that the suspect and victim were members of the staff of a printing press in Diobu, Port Harcourt. (NAN)
