OSOGBO – Senior Magistrates’ Court in Oshogbo, yesterday, ordered that a police officer, Johnson Igbonnie, 34, be remanded in prison, for allegedly causing the death of his colleague.

Police Prosecutor Elisha Olusegun said the accused committed the offence on October 20, 2011, at about 5.45 p.m. at Oke-Odo Police Station in Osogbo when an AK 47 service rifle with him discharged accidentally.

Olusegun alleged that Igbonnie negligently caused the death of one Sgt Musa Yahaya with the rifle, adding: “He thereby committed an offence contrary to section 317, and punishable under section 325 of the Criminal Code Cap 34, Volume 11, Laws of Osun 2003.”

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge, and his lawyer, Mr Remnus Ugwu, orally requested for his bail.

The oral bail application was rejected by the Senior Magistrate, Mr Olalekan Ijiyode, who ruled that the counsel should file a written bail application.

Ijiyode ordered that the accused be remanded in Ilesa Prison, and adjourned the case till May 17, for bail consideration.

In another development, one Aina Olasunkanmi, 35, was also remanded in prison yesterday for allegedly injuring a pregnant woman after beating her.

The Police Prosecutor, Abiodun Fagboyinbo, had told the court that the accused grievously harmed one Grace Adedosu by hitting her on her stomach and caused a problem with her pregnancy.

Fagboyinbo added that, the offence contravened section 335 of the State Criminal Law Procedure.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge.

The Senior Magistrate, Olalekan Ijiyode, however, ordered that, the accused be remanded in Ile-Ife prison pending the receipt of a written application from his counsel, Mr Okobe Nagite.

Ijiyode adjourned the case till May 16, for bail consideration.
