An unfortunate encounter with cybercriminals, who exploited a fraudulent website to siphon funds from her bank account, unveiled the stark reality of cyber vulnerabilities. This experience ignited a deep-seated passion for cybersecurity and set her on a path to becoming a trailblazer in the field.

From Personal Loss to Professional Resolve

Motunrayo’s ordeal with online fraud was more than a personal setback; it was an eye-opener. It revealed the critical need for robust security measures in protecting personally identifiable information (PII) and safeguarding digital landscapes. The incident piqued her interest in understanding the mechanisms behind social engineering, credential theft, and spoofing attacks—common strategies used by cybercriminals. Determined to prevent others from falling victim to similar schemes, she immersed herself in learning the intricacies of cybersecurity.

Her resolve was further solidified through professional experiences. As a cybersecurity analyst at a leading bank in Nigeria, Motunrayo worked tirelessly to secure sensitive information and protect the bank’s assets from cyber threats. Her role in the Security Operations Centre (SOC) involved incident response and management, ensuring timely analysis, containment, and remediation of security breaches. By collaborating with Managed Security Service Providers (MSSPs) and leveraging Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) tools, she honed her skills in defensive security and threat intelligence.

Bridging Knowledge and Practice

Motunrayo’s professional journey is underpinned by a strong academic foundation. She graduated with first-class honours in Food Science and Technology, emerging as the best graduating student at the departmental level from the Federal University of Technology, Akure. Her intellectual rigor and adaptability enabled her to transition seamlessly into the cybersecurity domain. This adaptability was evident during her time at Guaranty Trust Bank’s Tech Academy, where she excelled in programming and emerged as a top performer in a cohort predominantly composed of computer science graduates. She proceeded to pursue a master’s degree in Cybersecurity and Data Analytics at Loughborough University London, further enhancing her skills to protect digital systems and analyse critical data effectively.

Her pursuit of excellence extended beyond the classroom. Motunrayo’s commitment to continuous learning led her to acquire globally recognized certifications, including the SANS GIAC Certified Incident Handler (GCIH), AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, CompTIA Security+, CISSP, and ISO standards (ISO 27001, ISO 22301 & ISO 20000). These credentials reflect her expertise in areas such as cryptographic techniques, network security, identity and access management, unauthorised access monitoring, risk management and forensic investigations. 

Making an Impact in a Digital World

Motunrayo’s contributions to the cybersecurity field are not just technical but also strategic. Familiarity with frameworks like the MITRE ATT&CK® and ISO/IEC 27035 has enabled her to anticipate and counteract advanced threats. Her proactive approach to identifying attack patterns and leveraging threat intelligence has bolstered her team’s capacity to mitigate risks effectively.

Her leadership qualities have also shone brightly in her career. Within three years of joining her organization, Motunrayo’s diligence and expertise earned her a team leadership position. Her ability to think critically, communicate effectively, and foster collaboration has been instrumental in her professional growth and in inspiring her colleagues to strive for excellence.

Now based in London and working at TikTok, Motunrayo has amassed five years of experience in the cybersecurity domain. Her journey exemplifies the power of resilience and determination in overcoming challenges and achieving professional milestones. Having undergone series of training and acquired relevant certifications, she is well-equipped to address the evolving complexities of cybersecurity.

Looking ahead, Motunrayo envisions herself as a top-tier Cybersecurity analyst making a global impact. She aspires to contribute to reducing cybercrime and enhancing digital trust through innovative solutions and strategic interventions.
