Ado-Ekiti—A suspected armed robber who allegedly killed a police constable in Ado Ekiti about two weeks ago , claimed he killed cop , Olusegun Olufowobi in error.
Blessing, a 24-year old diploma student of Federal Polythecnic Ado Ekiti, and medical student of Madonna University, Okija, Anambra State, Kolade Olajide with two others were arrested by the police after an operation where the police constable was killed in his apartment along Ajebamidele Street, Ado Ekiti.
The suspect, who was shot by the policeman on the chest, had been receiving medical treatment at the Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospital, Ile Ife, Osun State, before he was arrested.
Making a confessional statement at the police command, Ado Ekiti yesterday, disclosed that he took to robbery to complete his education at Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, where he was studying Science Laboratory Technology before his arrest.
The suspect , however exonerated the only lady suspect among them, Faleye Sunkanmi, saying the lady was his girlfriend andnever knew he was an armed robber.
According to him, “I will never even be a hunter if I come back to this world again let alone becoming an armed robber. I know I have committed a grievous offence and I will say the truth, because the game is up”.
Blessing who was paraded at the police headquarters in Ado Ekiti, admitted to have participated in robbery operations in five places alongside Kolade before he killed the policeman, lamenting that the policeman was the first person he killed since he started robbery about two and half months ago.
’ l did not have intention to fire any shot at the Policeman, but the police officer fired at me as soon as l gained entrance into his apartment, he added.
2 arraigned over robbery
Akure—A son of a serving Commissioner Adetope Solagbade (22) and Odunayo Omodara have been arraigned before an Akure Chief Magistrate Court for armed robbery.
The two accused persons are undergraduates. One of them, a student of a Private University in the country was arrested along with other accused by the state anti-robbery squad on July 5,
A four count-charge of armed robbery was preferred against them and they were subsequently remanded in prison by Chief Magistrate Johnson Adelegan.
According to a charge sheet marked: MAK/432/2011 said that the suspects and others at large attacked their victims with dangerous weapons at Ilesha Garage in Akure.
They allegedly attacked one Prof Joseph Borede and disposed him and others of valuable items and cash.
The charge reads “That you Adetayo Solagbade (m), Odunayo Omodara (m) on the 5th day of July 2011 at 0930 hours at plot 20 block A GRA, Ilesa Road Akure, did conspire together to comit felony to wit armed robbery and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 6 (a) and (b) of the Robbery and Fire Arms (Special Provision) Act Cap R II Law of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.”
They allegedly invaded the residences of their victims with UTC cutlasses, Chisel, jack knife, mask and other dangerous weapons.
They allegedly dispossessed one Falodun Ayodeji of his HP laptop computer valued at N95, 000 and one crise alarms perfume valued at N4, 250, an offence punishable under Section 1 (2) (a &b) of the Robbery and Firearms Act.
The suspects were also accused of carrying out their robbery attack on Borede and collected from him; a Nokia handset valued N5, 000 and white Diamoni perfume valued at N12, 000.
They were also accused of attacking one Dr. E.O Aiyewalehinmi and took from him, a wristwatch valued N35, 000.
Chief Magistrate Adelegan did not take their pleas after the four count-charges was read but adjourned the case to September 9.
Adelegan directed that they should be remanded in prison custody when the state ministry of Justice will forward to the Legal Advice to the court.
