OSOGBO – No fewer than 15 people were yesterday injured in a bloody clash between members of rival political parties in Iree, Boripe Local Government Area of Osun State.
The clash which involved the ruling Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the town also left some students of the Osun State Polytechnic Iree injured.
Investigations revealed that the clash which began at about 3.45 pm when members of the PDP intercepted the ACN at the popular polytechnic junction in the town.
According to Mr Kehinde Usman, a student of the institution, the violent clash was occasioned by the inability of security agents to prevent members of the two political parties from organising their rallies on the same day.
It was learnt that the PDP members were from Ikirun road, while the ACN supporters were coming from the Ila-Orangun end of the road and met at the Poly technic junction where they started using unprintable words against each other.
Two of the hospitalized persons were said to be students of the state Polytechnic, Iree, while others were politicians. The wounded are still receiving treatment at a private hospital in the town.
The management of the Polytechnic had upon the directive of the state government ordered the students of the institution who travelled before last Saturday’s aborted election to resume, threatening that students who fail to resume and register would forfeit their studentship.
